A successful Open Week has come to a close and now the focus shifts to some big upcoming singles competitions. The Senior & Junior Scratch Cups are next on the menu with both taking place this Sunday. The following weekend will be President Mattie Byrne Snr’s Prize which is also a Golfer Of the Year event and two weeks after that is another Monthly Medal with more GOY points on offer. There will be one further Medal on October 3rd so there are still plenty of points on offer for anyone making a late challenge!

Darragh McComb continued his amazing run of form by again breaking the par of the course, this time in the Captains Prize to the Juniors. He picked up birdies on the 1st, 7th & 8th with his only blemish of the day coming on the 16th hole in a score of 69 gross. With a 65 nett, he’s now cut to a 3.9 handicap.

Diary Change:
A reminder that the monthly Medal that was penciled into the diary for August 15th has been rescheduled to September 12th.
New Standard Scratch Scores:
Following a visit from the GUI regarding testing the course re: difficulty, a new SSS has been put in place.
Blue Tees: New SSS of 73 (previously 72)
White Tees: New SSS of 71 (previously 70)
Junior Golf:
There was a good turnout for the Captain’s Prizes for Juniors which was held on Sunday last. The great weather on the day was matched by the standard of golf and some great scores were recorded. In the Junior Boys Darragh McComb shot a magnificent nett score of 65 playing off a 4 handicap to take first prize. In second place was Phillip Dreeling with a nett 67 and Cormac O’Driscoll captured third prize with a great score of 68 nett.
In the Girls section, Emma Comerford took first prize with 38pts from Judy Dick in second and Shauna Scannell third.
The player of the year awards were captured by Matt Kenny in the Boys section who had a magnificent year and is now playing off an 11 handicap. Shauna Scannell and Judy Dick could not be separated in the Girls section and they both shared the Player of the Year award.
Credit again to Dominic Bolger who coaches these juniors.
Gowran Park will host its first ever Open Competition for Junior Golfers on Monday 23rd August. It is an end of summer Open confined to Boys and Girls under 19 years of age with prizes for different age categories. Boys handicaps will be limited to 25 and the Girls limited to 36. The entry will be €10 and a special food menu will be available throughout the day. A time sheet will be in operation from 8am and entries from all Golf Clubs throughout the South East are most welcome.
