The first of the popular Wednesday evening 9 hole competitions begins on the 7th April 2010 and will continue on most Wednesdays throughout the summer up into late September.

These are always keenly anticipated occasions and have a large social element to them with a special light menu being laid on afterwards in the bar. The format of the competition can vary but mostly it’s Stableford off the White Tees, with the competition usually running from around 5 p.m. until dusk.

  • You arrive and pay your entry fee and sign into the book – there is also a €1 entry for the birdie hole which adds an extra element to the competition. A hole is drawn at random from the 9 (after play has been completed) and anyone who birdied that hole wins or shares in the fund. It gets carried over to the next week if it’s not won.
  • Many people just arrive as they finish work and join up with whomever is waiting on the tee – this makes it especially sociable and is a great way to mix and meet existing members. Some people will arrange to meet their friends but if you turn up alone you will always meet someone to play with.
  • It’s a mixed competition so it’s open to both ladies and gents, competing for the same prize.
  • Even if your golf was a shambles, there is still a chance of a prize! Every week a card is drawn out of the pile and, so long as the person is still in the bar, that person goes forward to be included in an end-of-year draw for a fantastic Holiday Voucher. Your name can come out on more than one week, increasing your chances even further… a good reason to stick around 🙂

For the first 3 weeks at the start of the competitions, we are going to experiment with a ¾ handicap allowance and monitor the outcomes. We will also post the results here to the blog and have a league table showing the 9-Hole Golfer of the Year.
