PLAY GOLF FOR HOLIDAYS AT GOWRAN PARK
Our Thursday singles reverts to a weekly competition from this Thursday with a timesheet in place. This year we are delighted to announce our Golfing for Holidays program throughout the Summer months. The last Thursday singles of each month will see a weekend break for 2 as the leading prize in the competitive Open Singles. All competitors in our weekly singles will be entered into a draw for a weekend away at the end of the season. Time Sheets are available at 056 7726699 or online at www.gowranpark.ie
Our first open singles took place last week in testing conditions. Lar Ryan (5) Rathdowney secured victory with a score of 40 pts. Fellow club man Alan Phelan took the runners up spot with 36 points.
Members Monthly Medal
The re-arranged members monthly medal over the weekend of 30th March. A cold day for golf with a prevailing wind and blue tees in play made for tough conditions for golf. However, Pat Nolan (18) took top spot with a score of 67nett. Seamus Brennan (10) took the runner up spot with 67nett and Mick Lane (9) taking third spot with 71nett.
Inter Club Competition
The Inter Club competitions kicked off for local members on Saturday 30th March. Gowran Park were pitted against local neighbours Mount Juliet in the preliminary round of the Barton Cup. Gowran Park were fortunate with the draw to have 3 matches at home and 2 in Mount Juliet. After some tight battles on the course Gowran ran out with a comfortable victory of four matches to one. Team members included Niall Kiely, Thos. Farrell, Larry Comerford, Kevin Fennelly, PJ. Dreeling, Ger Treacy, Niall Treacy, Paudie Lannon, Paul Whelan, Anthony McCormack. The team are now heading for the first round proper with the match to be played before the end of April
Spring Series
The final of our Spring Series took place on Thursday March 28th with a shotgun at 10.30am. All qualifiers from previous rounds were invited back for the final with the presentation taking place in the clubhouse immediately afterwards. 36 points as the score of the day with all three leading players scoring the same score. Once the countback had taken place Paddy McGuinness took the major honours with John Barcoe taking the runners up spot. Tommy Malone from Mountain View took third spot on the day.
Members 18 Hole Singles
The members enjoyed an 18 Hole Singles over last weekend. A large entry resulted in a win for Joe Lannon (12) 39 pts, 2nd David Kearney (7) 38 pts and Jim Wynne (13) 38 pts on countback.
Next Sunday’s Open Competition is an 18 Hole Scotch Foursomes. This competition format (2 drives to take place and alternate shots from there) will help various pairings to take advantage of some competitive practice. Timesheet is in operation for this competition and is available from the golf office or online.

Interclub Matches
Minor Team
The Minor team came out victorious over Castlecomer in Callan 3 ½ – 1 ½. Helen Dunne had early victory on 11th hole and had a long wait before the next match finished. Gay Latchford battled well but lost on 14th. Sally Kavanagh, who had been 6 down,was on a streak back to all flat after 16, only to lose the 17th to go 1 down playing the 18th. Her team mate Catherine O’ Driscoll was 3 up playing 15th and went on to win her match on 16. Sally completed her winning streak, in very cold conditions clinching her match on the 20th which allowed Kathleen Whitehead, whose match was flat after 16 ,shake hands on a halved match. A great victory over a gallant former finalist Castlecomer team.
Challenge Team
Unfortunately the Challenge team were beaten by Tullamore in Abbeylix on Friday by 3 matches to 2. The Team managed by Eileen Tobin were Rachel Dick, Mary Purcell, Mary Harding, Ina Sweeney and Fionnuala Hennebry.
Irish Mixed Foursomes
Congratulations to the Mixed foursomes team who had a great win against Castlecomer on Sunday by 3 matches to 2. Very close matches all round with matches winning on the 18th. The team was managed by Ann Mullins and Declan Davis – at home, Ann Mullins & Ger Tracey, Maura Coe & Liam O’Dwyer. Away Linda Donoghue & Thos. Farrell, Hilary Dick & Paul Whelan and Kate Hennessy & Mick Dillon.

Fred Daly Trophy
The juniors travelled to Rathdowney on Friday last to take part in the qualifying round of the Fred Daly Trophy. Considering that this is a scratch competition and all of the team are still under age next year, it was a very good performance to finish in sixth position. James Bergin was leading scorer for Gowran Park with an 86 gross, followed by Michael Carey who was one shot behind. Both Phillip Dreeling and Sean Roche also returned scores in the 80’s, while Ciaran Whelan completed the team score. Sean Whelan and Sean Carey were the other members of the team and also played well.
