Company Weekend Singles

Our Open Singles over last weekend proved popular despite the very inclement weather conditions on Saturday – all competitors enjoyed the course.  Brian Balfe (5) Enniscorthy GC, scooped first prize with 40 points from the large entry.  Gowran Park member Terry Mooney (9) took the runner-up spot with 38 points on a countback from Jim Walsh (15).  The daily prizes were won by Tim Howes, (5) Mount Juliet, Harry Lannon (17) Gowran Park and Olan Corcoran (6) Gowran Park.

Team News

Mixed foursomes lost to Kilkenny yesterday in a ding dong battle. Great win for Eoin and Nora in Gowran with Alex and Ann taking their pairing to the 18th. The match was in the balance with Paul and Ger on the 19th and Jim and Kate on the 18th. Standing on the top of the hill on the 1st fairway watching both greens was fantastic. Joe, Sinead, Sean, John surrounded by Kilkenny supporters all waiting to see who would make that winning stroke….The Alamo. No more could have been asked of the team who fought magnificently throughout in a game played with wonderful spirit and courtesy. Well done to all, this experience will strengthen us for next year. (Beautifully penned by John O’Driscoll)

The South Leinster also bowed out at the first hurdle to Kilkenny last Saturday. Some awful weather didn’t help as our seven golfers played their best but just fell short this year.

Can I call on every member of Gowran to get involved in the Teams next year? We have a small membership compared to most clubs so it’s vital we get as many members involved as possible. Its time for a winning mentality and team progression in all interclub competitions. Let’s become the club every other golf club fears in interclub competitions.

Anyone again with ideas of how we can improve team participation please let me know.

Barton Cup and Jimmy Carroll Cup on this week, best of luck to both teams.

Next Week

We have a White Tee Stableford this weekend. There is racing this Saturday, last minute scheduled race meeting. Course will be closed in the afternoon but members can play in the morning and Sunday.

Club Fundraiser

Our annual club fundraiser is Sunday May the 31st. It’s a 2 person classic with cracking prizes. Let’s get the Timesheet full so let all your golf buddies know about the day and book a tee time early.

Golfsure Insurance

Don’t forget to take out the Golfsure Insurance. Only €20 and can be paid any time in the office to AnnMarie.

Course Work

The poor weather has put the bunker work back a few weeks. Once the course is dry enough work will begin. Eddie & Joe have put a lot of effort researching the best options available to address the bunker issue. The plan is to line the bunkers with astro turf and then fill with new sand. A hockey pitch surface in Carlow has been bought this week and €20,000 of sand purchased.

Just To Let You Know

You may have noticed the big marquee on the practice area. This is being used by Glanbia for a vote and will be gone by the end of May. Dominic still has room to coaching the juniors on Saturday down there so it will have little impact.

Eddie & Joe have kindly offered to sponsor the first BBQ Friday night which is on June 12th. The Golf and BBQ will be free and the lads have also sponsored all the prizes. Very nice gesture so thank the lads if you see them.
